Painting a car is a multi-step process and requires a lot of
patience and perfectionism. Steps involved include:
Collect the proper supplies and prepare your workspace.

Having all your supplies ready beforehand will prevent you from realizing you
forgot something mid-project. The amount of paint will vary depending on the
area requiring paint. Make sure your work area is clean, free of dust and
debris as this will help prevent blemishes.
Remove and fix rust spots.
- Check the vehicle for rust
spots. Light rust areas can be sanded before painting whereas heavily rusted
areas will need to be treated and sealed to prevent rust spread.
Determine the type of paint you are going to use.
- Choose
between Waterborne and Solventborne paint as these are specifically designed
for vehicles. Other types of paint should not be used when painting your
vehicle.
Sand your vehicle.
- Sanding is an important step as you are
sanding away layers to give the new paint an even surface to bond to. Once your
vehicle is sanded, finish it with wet-tot-dry sandpaper. Use circular
motions.
Wipe down your vehicle.
- After you are done sanding, you want to make sure your vehicle
is wiped down and dust is removed. To do this simply use thinners and a clean
rag to remove any dust. Let this dry before applying paint.
Prime the vehicle.
- When priming your vehicle, make sure
you wear a face mask and goggles to avoid contact. This step helps seal the car
and bodywork. It ensures the paint will have a smooth surface to bond to.
Priming also helps reduce any color variations when the paint is applied.
Primer must completely dry between each coat.
Sand again.
- Sand your vehicle once again and
clean it with thinners and a clean rag. Do not use too much thinner as this can
strip the primer off.
Apply paint.
- Apply between three to four layers of paint and between each layer, let it
dry thoroughly.
Apply lacquer.
- Cover the vehicle with 1-2
coats of lacquer, allowing it to dry in between layers.
Buff the vehicle.
- Once the lacquer has
dried, check the vehicle for blemishes and lightly sand. Buff the car lightly
so it doesn't burn the paint.
